Next generation underwater inspection drone from FHF funded project

Mohn Technology has in Q2 – 2025 built the latest prototype in the FHF funded project aiming to aid the aquaculture industry by providing AI based machine vision inspection and advanced autonomous functions.

The latest generation of our remotely operated vehicle (ROV), Sentinel, introduces significant advancements in design and capability. Built with a rounded PEHD frame, the structure has been fully vectorized in both horizontal and vertical planes, enclosing and protecting all internal components.

A custom-developed 400V, 1500W power supply is fully integrated, delivering robust energy for demanding underwater operations. The new umbilical cable not only provides power but is also engineered to support the full weight of the ROV during lifting.

Processing power has seen a major leap forward, with an upgraded onboard PC offering a 10-fold increase in AI performance alongside significantly enhanced conventional computing capabilities.

Additional hardware improvements include:

  • A new inertial measurement unit (IMU)
  • A high-performance 2MP machine vision camera with motorized lens
  • A stereo camera system
  • Four high-intensity lights
  • An angled sonar for optimized spatial awareness

Designed for efficiency and serviceability, the system features a modular layout with quick-connect components, making field replacements fast and intuitive. Spare ports are available for connecting additional equipment.

The ROV is rated for depths of up to 150 meters (limited by buoyancy components), with a core system capable of 300 meters. It operates as a server accessible via local network or internet, enabling remote access and control.

Compact and portable, the ROV measures 60 x 31 x 32 cm and weighs 19 kg—offering a powerful, scalable platform for a wide range of underwater applications.
